ಹೊಸ ಅಲೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು

ನಾಲ್ಕೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹರಟುವಾಗ, ಸಿನೆಮಾನುರಕ್ತಿ ಇದ್ದವರೆಲ್ಲ ತೀರಾ predictable ಆದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದದ್ದಿತ್ತು.

ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳೋ ಮಸಾಲೆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಮನಸೋತವರು. ಚಿತ್ರ ಎಂದರೆ ತೆಲುಗು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಂತೆ ಇರಬೇಕು ಅನ್ನುವುದು ಇವರ ಒಕ್ಕೊರಲಿನ ಮಂತ್ರ. ತಮ್ಮ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿನ ತಾರೆಯರು ತೆರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಶಿಳ್ಳೆ ಹೊಡೆದು,ಅವರ ಕಟೌಟುಗಳಿಗೆ ಉದ್ದುದ್ದ ಹಾರಗಳು, ಹಾಲು, ಮಜ್ಜಿಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮೆರೆದಾಡಿಸಿ ಸಂಭ್ರಮ ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರಿವರು. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸೆಂಟಿಮೆಂಟು, ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಹಾಸ್ಯ, ನಾಲ್ಕು ಹೊಡೆದಾಟಗಳು,ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಡುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ, ಎಂದೂ ಮುಗಿಯದ ಮದರ್ ಸೆಂಟಿಮೆಂಟು, ಬೊಂಬೆಯಂತಹಾ ಹೀರೋಯಿನ್ನು, ಕರುನಾಡನ್ನು ಹೊಗಳುವ ಎರಡು ವೀರಾವೇಶದ ಸಾಲುಗಳು, ನಾಯಕನಟನನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿ ಹೊಗಳಿ, ಅಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೇರಿಸಿ, ಹುಲಿ, ಸಿಂಹ, ಕರಡಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಹೀರೋಪೂಜೆ, ಅವವೇ ಮಾಸ್ ಮಸಾಲೆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಫಾರ್ಮುಲಾ ಪಾಕ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಸಾಕೆನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರು. ಅಭಿರುಚಿ ಏನೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ, ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿಂದ ಥಿಯೇಟರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ದುಡ್ಡು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ನೋಡಿ, ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸುವವರು ಇದೇ ವರ್ಗದವರೇ.

ಇನ್ನು ಆರ್ಟ್ ಸಿನೆಮಾ, ಹಾಲಿವುಡ್ಡು, ವರ್ಲ್ಡ್ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ಎಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಿ, ಹೊಸತರ ರುಚಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ, ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನೇ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸ ಹೊರಟ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಪುರುಷರಂತೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ movie buffಗಳು ಇನ್ನೊಂದೇ ತರದ ವರಸೆ ತೆಗೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರು. ಇರಾನಿನ ಹೊಸ ಅಲೆ, ಇಟಾಲಿಯನ್ Neo Realism, French New wave, ಮಲಯಾಳದ ಸಹಜತೆ, ಸರಳತೆ, ಮರಾಠಿಯ ಹೊಸತನ, ತಮಿಳಿನ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ವಾಸನೆ, ಅನುರಾಗ್ ಕಶ್ಯಪನ ಧೈರ್ಯ, ಟರಾಂಟಿನೋನ ಗತ್ತು ಗೈರತ್ತು, ನೋಲನ್ನನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಚಾತುರ್ಯ, Scorseseಯ ಪಾತ್ರವೈವಿಧ್ಯ ಎಲ್ಲ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹಠ ಹಿಡಿದವರು ಈ ತರದವರು. ಇವರನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಚಿತ್ರ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ, ಇವರು ಸ್ವತಃ ಥಿಯೇಟರಿಗೆ ಬರುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ಕು, ಟ್ವಿಟ್ಟರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಪಾರವಾದ ಬುದ್ಧಿಶಕ್ತಿಯ, ಭಯಂಕರ ಮೇಲ್ಮಟ್ಟದ ಅಭಿರುಚಿಯ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಕಾಣುವವರು. "ಲೂಸಿಯಾ ಇಡೀ ಜೀವಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದಷ್ಟು ದುಡ್ಡನ್ನು ಸ್ಟಾರುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರ ಮೊದಲ ಶನಿವಾರವೇ ಮಾಡಿರುತ್ತದೆ" ಅಂತ ಪವನ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು ಅದನ್ನೇ.

ರಾಜ್ ಕುಮಾರರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಪುಟ್ಟಣ್ಣ ಹಾಗಿದ್ದರು, ಪಂತುಲು ಹೀಗಿದ್ದರು, ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನ್ ಹೇಗಿದ್ದರು, ಅನಂತ ಶಂಕರರು ಎಂತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದು ಮುಂತಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ, ನಾಸ್ಟಾಲ್ಜಿಯಾದ ಜೋಕಾಲಿಯಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯಲೊಪ್ಪದ, "ನಾನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷವಾಯಿತು", "ಕ್ವಿಟ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾನು ಥಿಯೇಟರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿಲ್ಲ" ಅಂತೆಲ್ಲ ಉಸುರುವ, "ಆ ಕಾಲವೊಂದಿತ್ತು, ದಿವ್ಯ ತಾನಾಗಿತ್ತು" ಪಕ್ಷದವರು ಇನ್ನೊಂದೇ ಬಗೆಯವರು. ಇವರು ಚಿತ್ರವೊಂದು ಟೀವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರದ ಹೊರತು ನೋಡುವವರಲ್ಲ, ನೋಡಿದರೂ ಈಗಿನದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪುವವರಲ್ಲ, ಹೊಸತರಲ್ಲೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಿರಬಹುದೇ ಎಂದು ಹುಡುಕುವವರೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ತಾವೇ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಥಿಯೇಟರಿಗಂತೂ ಹೇಗೂ ಬರುವವರಲ್ಲ.

ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆ ಹಲವು ದೆಸೆಗಳಿಂದ ಹೊಸತನವೇನೋ ಬಂದೇ ಬಂತು. ಭಿನ್ನ ಮಾರ್ಗದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ ಈಚೆಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಬಂದಿವೆ ಅನ್ನಬೇಕು. ಹೊಸ ಅಲೆ ಇಡಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಂತೋ, ಅರ್ಧಾರ್ಧ ಬಂತೋ, ಬರುವ ತಯಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆಯೋ, ಬಂದು ಹೋಯಿತೋ, ಬರಲಾರದೋ, ಬಂದೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿತೋ,ಉಲ್ಲೋಲ ಕಲ್ಲೋಲವೇ ಆಯಿತೋ, ಆಗಲಿದೆಯೋ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ.  ಒಂದು ಸಿಂಹಾವಲೋಕನ ಮಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತಹಾ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳದ್ದೊಂದು ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಅಂತ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಅಣಿಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಕೆಲವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವು ಕಳೆದ ನಾಲ್ಕೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದವು, ಮಸಾಲೆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಸಿದ್ಧಸೂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೊಸಹಾದಿಯನ್ನು ತುಳಿದವು. ಪ್ರಯೋಗಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿವೆ ಅನ್ನಲಾಗದು, ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರುವುದೂ ಅಶಕ್ಯ. ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇಷ್ಟ ಆಗುವುದೂ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಏನೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ, ಇಷ್ಟು ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳಾಗಿವೆ ಎಂದಾದರೂ ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ:

ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರಗಳಾಗಬೇಕಾದ/ಆಗಬಹುದಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು

ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆಧಾರಿತ ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಕಡಮೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಆಗಾಗ ಕೇಳಿಬರುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ದೊರೆ ಭಗವಾನ್, ಪುಟ್ಟಣ್ಣ , ಸಿದ್ದಲಿಂಗಯ್ಯ, ಫಣಿ ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ಇವರೆಲ್ಲ ಇಂತಹಾ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ನಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇದೆ.
ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳಿಬಿಡುವ ಬದಲು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರಗಳಾಗಬೇಕಾದ/ಆಗಬಹುದಾದ, ದೃಶ್ಯರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಅಂತಸ್ಸತ್ವ/ಕಸುವುಳ್ಳ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಒಂದು ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಯೋಚನೆ ಬಂತು. ತರಾಸು, ಗಣೇಶಯ್ಯ ಮುಂತಾದವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿಬಂದಿರುವ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿರುವ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು. ಇಂಥವು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಇರಬಹುದು, ಹೊಚ್ಚ ಹೊಸ ವಸ್ತು ಇರುವಂಥವು, ಇರುವ ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನೇ ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದವು, ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಡಿಗೆ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ಆದರೆ ಸಿನಿಮೀಯವಾದ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವವು , ಕುತೂಹಲ ಕೆರಳಿಸುವವು, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಚಿತ್ರಕಥೆಯಾಗಬಲ್ಲವು, ಹಲವರು ಓದಿಲ್ಲದೇ ಇರುವವು, ನಿಮಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವವು ಹೀಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟೂ ಇರಬಹುದು. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿನೆಮಾಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗುವಂತೆ ಇದ್ದರಾಯಿತು. ನೀವು ಓದಿರುವ ಇಂತಹಾ ಕಥೆ/ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸಿ, ಅದನ್ನು ಯಾಕೆ ಶಿಫಾರಸುಮಾಡುತ್ತೀರಿ ಅಂತಲೂ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು. ತಡವೇಕೆ ? ಪಟ್ಟಿ ತಯಾರು ಮಾಡೋಣ ! ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಲಹೆ ಸೂಚನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಶುರುಮಾಡಿ ಅಂತ ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ಪುಸ್ತಕಪ್ರೇಮಿ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ ಸಮೂಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಬಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ:

ಬಿ ವಿ ಅನಂತರಾಮ್ ಅವರದ್ದರ ಕೊರತೆಯೆಂದರೆ ಐದೇ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಸರಕಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಐವತ್ತು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಇನ್ನೂರಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಹತ್ತು ಉತ್ತಮವಾದವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲೆಹಾಕಿ, ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ನಾಲ್ಕನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಬಾಂಡ್ ಮತ್ತು ಮಿಷನ್ ಇಂಪಾಸಿಬಲ್ಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಸೇರಿ ಮೂವ್ವತ್ತು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಬಂದಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಾಗದಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸವಾಲು, ಕಡಮೆ ಬಜೆಟ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸವಾಲು. ರಾಝಿಯ ತರ ಮಾಡುವುದಾದರೆ ಆಗಬಹುದು. ಅನಂತರಾಮ್ ಅವರು ಡಿಟೆಕ್ಟಿವ್ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರನ ಪಾತ್ರ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡೂ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ , ಅಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲವು ಸಸ್ಪೆನ್ಸ್ ಥ್ರಿಲ್ಲರ್ಗಳಿರಬಹುದು. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಬಾಹುಳ್ಯವೇ ತೊಡಕು , ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ತ್ವ ಇರುವವು ಯಾವುವು ಅಂತ ಹುಡುಕುವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಕೆಲಸ.

ನನ್ನ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ: ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುಗರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ತಿರಾ ಕಡಿಮೆ.....ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಕನ್ನಡ ಓದುವವರು ಇನ್ನೂ ಕಡಿಮೆ......ಆ ಓದುವ ಕೆಲವರಲ್ಲೇ, ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ತಮ್ಮ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನೇ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ತಾರೆ......ಇನ್ನುಳಿದವರಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪನಾ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಕೊರತೆ..... ಇನ್ನು 'ಇದನ್ನು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಓಡುದಿಲ್ಲ' ಅಂತ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರ ಹಾಕೊರು ಇನ್ನೊಂದಷ್ಟರು.......
ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾಸರವಳ್ಳಿ, ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು, ಶೇಷಾದ್ರಿ, ನಾಗಾಭರಣ, ಸುನೀಲ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ದೇಸಾಯಿ.......ಮುಂತಾದ ಒಳ್ಳೇ ತಳಿಯ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು ನೇಪಥ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.....
ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದೋ ಎರಡೋ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಟ್ಟು/ಸೂಪರ್ ಹಿಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿಕೋತಾ, ಹಾಗೋ ಹೀಗೋ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಉದ್ಯಮ ನಡೀತಿದೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ......

Hk Sharath - ಮಂಜು ಬನವಾಸೆ ಅವರ 'ಸೋಲು ಗೆದ್ದವನದ್ದು!' ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದಿದ ನಟ ಸುಚೇಂದ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಅವರು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಬಹುದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಕ್ಸಲ್ ನಿಗ್ರಹ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯ ದಟ್ಟ ವಿವರಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗೆ ಹೇಳಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದಂತಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ
'ಸೋಲು ಗೆದ್ದವನದ್ದು!' ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾನೇ 'ಸೋಲು ಗೆದ್ದವನದ್ದು!' ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದೆ. ಓದಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರೆ, ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಷ್ಟು ಸಶಕ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಬದುಕು, ನಕ್ಸಲರ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆ, ಎ ಎನ್ ಎಫ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ಕುರಿತ ಕಥಾಹಂದರವಿದೆ. ಸಿನಿಮಾಗೆ ಹೊಂದುವಂತಹ ಕಥಾನಕ.
ಎಸ್ ಎಸ್ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಅವರ 'ಕರಗದ ನಗು' ಕಥಾ ಸಂಕಲನದಲ್ಲಿನ 'ಗುಜರಿ ಕನಸು' ಕಥೆ ಆಧರಿಸಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ಮಂಜುನಾಥ ಪಾಂಡವಪುರ ಎಂಬುವವರು ಮುಂದಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ
 ಇನ್ನು 'ಕರಗದ ನಗು'ವಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ 'ಗುಜರಿ ಕನಸು' ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬಜೆಟ್ ನ (ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುವ) ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಥೆ ನನಗೂ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

Mallappa Basaragi - ಬಹಳ ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಓದಿದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.ಬರೆದವರ ಹೆಸರು ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. " ಅತಿ ಮಧುರವೀ ಸ್ನೇಹ " ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಹೆಸರು. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದರೆ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ

Guruganesh Bhat - ನೀವು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸಲು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೀರಿ, ಆದರೆ ನನಗೆ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ವೈದ್ಯ ಅವರ ತ್ರಯಸ್ಥ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳದೇಇರಲು ಮನಸ್ಸು ಒಪ್ಪುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಕತೆಯ ಹಲವು ಎಳೆಗಳು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಎಷ್ಟೊ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಳವಡಿಕೆಯಾಗಿರಬಹುದು ಅನಿಸುತ್ತೆ. ನನಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಕಥನ ತ್ರಯಸ್ಥ.

Chaitanya Majalukodi - ಮಹಾಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನ 'ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರ' ನನ್ನ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ಶೈಲಿಗೆ ತಂದ್ಕೊಂಡು ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಬಾರಿ ಕಣ್ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಅಣ್ಣಾವ್ರೇ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ, ವಿಷ್ಣುನೇ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರ...!! 😍 ಉತ್ತಮ ಅಭಿರುಚಿ ಇರೋ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಆಗಿದ್ರೆ, ಮಯೂರ ಬಂದಾಗ, ಅದರ ಹಿಂದೆನೇ ಇದನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಬಹುದಿತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನ ಮಾಡಿ ವಿಷ್ಣು-ರಾಜ್ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ/ಪರೋಕ್ಷ ವೈಮನಸ್ಯವನ್ನ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಮಾಡಬಹುದಿತ್ತು....  

Movies with good plot twists

Here is a quick recommendation list of movies with great plot twists.

A good twist for me is one which makes perfect sense even during a second viewing, It is fairly clued, you feel like, "Why on earth did I not see that one coming? All the clues were there!", The worst ones are the ones where they say, It all was just a dream!! Or It was just an imagination/hallucination of Hero!! (There are some notable exceptions to this)

The clues were all there but the writer cleverly misled us. It is similar to how the magician misdirects us. Like Nolan had put it in The Prestige, we were not watching closely! It was right in front of our eyes but the writer managed to misdirect us and make us perceive things differently. When it is revealed in the end, it makes us go 'Wow!!'

Some of the most deliciously ironic/poetic twists that I have seen are the ones in TV shows -- The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I Would highly recommend these 2 shows.

Some films that had a big impact on my view of cinema

For the uninitiated - this is like the game of Kho kho where someone lists his/her list of 10 movies that changed his/her life and asks you to do the same. The problem is that for the first time in life I have realised that 10 is such a small number!! I will have to list at least 100-150 to do justice to all the great films out there. So, I will cheat and add more. Promise less and deliver more!!

So here are ten(?) movies which, in some way or the other, have managed to stay with me. Not so much as change my life, but these films helped me escape it. I was stunned/awed/gobsmacked/moved by the artistry of these. In some way or the other these films changed my idea of what a cinema is and what a cinema is supposed to do.

Not including RGV's Sarkar, Hrishikesh Mukherjee,Anurag kashyap, Upendra, Puttanna kanagal and other Indian greats as we are already well aware of those.

1. Memento and every other film of Nolan(Well, before you call me a Nolantard let me exclude The Dark Knight rises)!!

2. Judgement at Nuremberg - Any time anybody recommends 12 Angry men to me I thank them by recommending this in return!

3. Miller's Crossing - Heights of Coen brothers' madness. The way the characters were etched and the way the dialogues are written is worth studying. Coens could have filled Quotable quote sections of at least ten copies of Reader's Digest with the dialogues they wrote.

4. Watch Lock,Stock and 2 smoking barrels and you will get the heights of Guy Ritchie's madness!! Totally changed my views on using the camera, editing and background music.

5. Saving Private Ryan and Artificial Intelligence by Steven Spielberg

6. Ran by Akira Korosawa. Others with same emotional intensity -Hotel Rwanda, Bicycle thieves, Umberto D

7. Aguirre the wrath of God - Hypnotic and mesmerising work of ART. As a buy one get one free offer I will recommend movies by the master Theo Angelopulos - A landscape in the mist, Weeping meadows, eternity and day.

8. Hero by Zhang Yimou - Every frame a painting!! That reminds me of Days of Heaven by Terrence Mallick and that in turn reminds me of Spring,Summer,Fall,WInter,Spring by Kim ki Duk !!

9. Cinema of Iran - Children of Heaven, Song of the sparrows, The cyclist, Kandahar

10. Cinema of Jeane Pierre Jeunet - Amelie, Delicatessen.

Good foreign films watched in Bengaluru International film festival 2011

King of Devil's Island - Norwegian. An intense film set in a correctional facility. Structured almost like a prison film, it is entertaining without sacrificing the subtlety. A great watch. 

Kofta - Netherlands. A cute little Chaplinesque comedy.

Lemon Tree - An Israel film about a Palestinian woman who lives in the border and her house is next to that of the defence minister of Israel. An interesting concept treated in a masterly way. Had some quirky humour as an added bonus.

About Elly - This was superb. Great attention to detail, great characters, good suspense. All in all a great film.

Adaminte makan Abu - A Malayalam film about a couple that wants to go for a Haj tour. Simple yet subtle. A very good film.

Mao's last dancer - Australian. Love Story of a Chinese ballet dancer set in a politically charged situation. Nicely done.

Colours of the Mountain: A Colombian film that has kids in the main roles and Guerrilla warriors in the background. An excellent film. A lighthearted film with a grim background. A must watch.

Flying pigs: A very good film on Hooliganism. Football fans would connect more easily with the story line. It was nicely done.

Top Floor left wing: Think of a Sociopolitical satire, think of a film having a hostage crisis and then Laugh out loudly. Now think of a Hostage film which is a Sociopolitical satire and makes you laugh out riotously and you have this film!!

A separation - Another classic drama by the Iranian director Asghar Farghadi. Expertly done with deft touches.A must watch

Recommended War movies

It's movie recommendation time again! We saw talented filmmakers making films like Dunkirk, The darkest hour and Hacksaw Ridge this year. So I assume that the spectre of war continues to lure filmmakers and audience alike. Like Dunkirk, most of the films in the list offer a unique, immersive experience and are very well researched(Many were based on books), most of them, while being good stories, also recreate the events very realistically. There are some well known titles but If you’re looking for those lesser-known, "Why didn't I hear about this earlier?" types, look no further :

The Longest day(1962) - Focuses on the invasion of Normandy(Which was famously depicted in Saving private Ryan later). This black and white epic is the granddaddy of all the big budget war films. You must watch it for the sheer ambition, massive nature of the production and the kind of spectacular visuals you would naturally expect out of a gigantic production like that.

A bridge too far(1977) - Like the Longest day, this needs to be praised for the massive nature of the production. (As a fun exercise, try counting the number of stars in the cast !), It recreates a complicated,logistically challenging and tragic military venture to capture an important bridge. Watch it for the breathtaking, extravagant scale and sweep. There are no CGI effects; most of what's onscreen is real, Like in The longest day, if you see four thousand people in the screen, you can be sure that they actually used 4,000 people to shoot it !

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War : Korean. One of the most intense and bloodiest war movies out there. The war scenes are unflinchingly visceral,gruesome,frenetic and harrowing. That said, at the core of it is an emotional story of brothers that will pull your heartstrings.

The Dam busters(1955) - This forgotten classic stands out because it chronicles the efforts of a middle-aged scientist whose work was crucial for an RAF mission to bomb the German dams. A fascinating real life story is made engrossing by the gradual buildup of tension and the likeable lead character.

Saving Private Ryan - This has become the gold standard against which all war films are measured. Chilling, horrific and unforgettable images of the opening sequence are matched by the cinematic virtuosity showcased in the staging of the long battle in the end. Be it the choreography of the battles, or the emotional appeal of the story or the meticulous period details, Spielberg gets it all right.

Ran(1985): Akira Kurosawa's take on King Lear set in the 16th century feudal Japan. It's not a war film but has some battle scenes that are visually arresting, colourful and
electrifying. The film is grand-scaled, bleak, evocative and magnificent. You should also read the stories about the making. For ex: They actually built a castle for the film and burned it down !

Twelve O’Clock High (1949) - This superlative drama was written by people who actually worked in the Air force. It is then no surprise that it is one of the first
Hollywood films to probe realistically the pressure and anxieties of occupying high-command positions. There is surprisingly little fighting and action for a war film. The depiction of emotional vulnerability of soldiers coupled with the theme of leadership under extraordinary circumstances makes it a superior film. The film has been used by the military in workshops.

Red Cliff(Released as part 1 and part 2): This Chinese historical war movie is a grand, sweeping spectacle. The tactics, strategies, counter-moves,formations and
things like that is what makes it special. It is flashy and massive. This was one of the primary inspirations for Bahubali.

Patton (1970) - This one is remembered for the bombastic and mesmerising performance of George C Scott as the flamboyant US general, George Patton (Scott famously refused to accept the Oscars and said that the Oscars were a "meat market" !) Francis Ford Coppola of Godfather fame wrote a brilliant script. The battle set pieces are set in authentic locations(They shot it in 18 countries!) and are expertly envisioned without any computer graphics.

The Front Line (2011): Set during the closing weeks of the Korean War, it follows a platoon of soldiers from the south as they try to take an important hill. It starts off as a mystery themed character piece and slowly turns into an intense, unrelenting survival story of brotherhood in the midst of a chaotic battle.

Enemy at the gates - This one is set around the siege of Stalingrad and it concentrates on intense stand-offs and cat and mouse games between two snipers. that remind us of nail-biters This quasi-factual film is an expertly crafted thrill ride.

Assembly (2007): A Chinese film showing the Chinese civil war. It starts with gritty and riveting battle sequences and goes one step further, shows what happens once the war is over. It changes gears and becomes a moving tale of honour, heroism, and sacrifice.

The big red one(1980) - Sam Fuller who was known as a tough talking,talented filmmaker, was actually there on the shores of Africa and Europe as a soldier. So he does not romanticise war and chooses to immerse viewers in the experiences of four young soldiers as they travel in this unsentimental, episodic tale. His version was 4 hours long and the studio had cut half of it for theatrical release which broke Fuller's heart. We now have a restored version that has 45 minutes of extra footage. This acclaimed version is the one that you should watch.

A Very Long Engagement (2004): Jean Pierre Jeunet is known for his dazzling visual style, whimsical,quirky characters and crazy colour palette. This film is no
exception. Though not a war film, it is the story of one girl's search for her missing fiancee that has the trench warfare of World War I as the backdrop.

9th Company: This provides a glimpse into the tragic Soviet occupation of Afghanistan through the eyes of a handful Russian soldiers. It is a bit like Full metal jacket blended with The Platoon set in the unforgiving landscapes of Afghanistan. A rousing combat film filled with action.

Paths of Glory(1957) - Legendary director Stanley Kubrick manages to create a devastating experience. Cold-blooded inhumanity of War and the kind of things done in the name of patriotism are depicted in such a blunt and scathingly brilliant manner that it was banned in France for 18 years.

Full metal jacket - Kubrick revisited the war genre with this. He wasn't particularly interested in following conventions, nor was he ever known to cater to an audience's expectations and you can see that here and in Paths of Glory. The film is split into two distinct halves. First half is spent in Boot Camp training which is strangely and extraordinarily compelling and humorous at the same time. 2nd half is spent in the battleground. All in all, the created an intriguingly intimate war film like no other.

Platoon - This provocative film by Oliver Stone, who himself was a soldier, captures the dehumanizing power of war effectively. Actors were made to undergo the rigorous training just like soldiers do and were made to lose sleep for authenticity! We get to see the relentless horror and the senseless savagery as the director takes us through the messy tour of duty in the jungles of Vietnam.

The Admiral - Roaring Currents (2014): This one broke all the box office records in Korea, if you watch it you will know why. This is a period film showing Naval battle. The sea battles are rousing and epic. The scale is huge and magnificent. Drink some water if you have to in advance, you will not blink or get up during the third act, the climactic battle goes on for 30-40 minutes, it is incredible and epic.

Honorable mentions:

Hell is for heroes(1962) - A decent low budget film by the famous director Don Siegel (He was Clint Eastwood's guru) about a group of soldiers trying to hold off a superior enemy.

Idi i smotri (Come and See) - The destruction of a Russian village seen through the eyes of a peasant boy. It is bizarre, disturbing, and haunting

Battle of Britain - This big budget film was directed by Guy Hamilton of James Bond series fame. Falls into the good but nothing exceptional category.

71 into the fire is a South Korean film about a bunch of students trying to defend a strategically important territory. Nothing extraordinary but there is drama,rivalry,tension and all that to keep you hooked.

Cross of Iron - Sam Peckinpah, known for making westerns that were brutal, unforgiving, and vicious was an ideal choice to direct a war movie and he delivers. Peckinpah used to drink heavily during the shoot and ended up exceeding the budget and waging a war with the producers(He made this one towards the end of his declining career). Film depicts the struggles and the power politics of a German unit advancing against the Soviet Union in the eastern front. Depiction of small unit warfare is excellent, the battle scenes are Confusing, chaotic, frightening . Technically brilliant and superbly photographed.

The Brest Fortress (2010): About desperate Russians trying to protect their place from the invading troops. A good one time watch.

Indigènes (Days of Glory): About the journey of Africans who join the French army and struggle with discrimination and racial stuff. Manages to show the world war from a completely different perspective.

Some good Indian films

A quick one, some good Indian films that you might have missed:

Kaksparsh - This Marathi film set in the pre independence times successfully transports you to a bygone era of joint families, child marriages and young widows. A Power packed performance by Sachin Khedekar elevates this haunting tale of love and suffering to another level. The authentic looking Konkan setting and an unconventional love story make this a must watch.

Budhia Singh – Born to Run : This is a heartfelt biopic of Odisha’s wonder-boy Budhia. It is a stirring drama powered by a sparkling chemistry between the lead actors (Manjob Bajpai as the firebrand coach and Mayur Patole's effortless performance as the slum kid). The film uses the usual sports film clichés and mixes it with the loss of childhood theme. The story is refreshingly set in Odisha and most importantly this story needs to be heard as it is based on real life.

Bey Yaar - This slick and witty film rekindled life into an almost dead Guajarati film industry. It is a rare film that seamlessly mixes a con movie plot with a Dil Chatha hai style tale of male camaraderie and centers its emotional heart in a touching father son relationship.

Baandhon - I had liked Jahnu Barua's Hindi film Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and watched this acclaimed Assamese movie, Barua effectively immerses us into the world of an old couple with the minimalist and unhurried style that the award winning films are known for.

Baise Srabon - Crafty,terrifying serial-killers have long been an obsession for Hollywood, this is a desi serial killer story. An experienced movie buff might be able to predict some of the twists and turns, the film works in spite of that. Intertwining the story with poetry and a Bengali literary movement is what makes the story unfold in a unique fashion.

Antardwand - This remarkable film is based on the weird idea of Groom kidnapping which is actually prevalent in some parts of rural Bihar. It is the performances and the authenticity that sell an idea like this(the plot is at once novel and bizarre)

Punjab 1984 - This emotionally charged Punjabi film depicts the turbulent times post 1984 (and the subsequent Khalistan movement). Apart from Gulzar saab's Maachis not many films have dealt with this theme, hence the story of how one family gets caught in such a political struggle was interesting for me. 2nd half was a bit like a routine masala film but Pawan Malhotra and Kirron Kher's splendid performances managed to keep me hooked.

Lakshmi - I am a fan of Nagesh Kukunoor's 3 Deewarein and feel that no other film of his matched the brilliance of that. Let me say that Lakshmi is his 2nd best work. It is a story about human trafficking and prostitution. If you are faint hearted, you will find the harrowing, gut-wrenching, disturbing realism of the film difficult to swallow. More disturbing than film's graphic violence however is the fact that it is based on a true story.

ಬಲಿ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯ ತಿವಿಕ್ರಮ

ರೆಪ್ಪೆ ತೆರೆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಕನಸೊಂದರಂತೆ ಇದನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಊಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ. ಒಂದು ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಚೆಸ್ ಪಂದ್ಯಾಟ. ಮದ ಗಜಗಳ ಗುದ್ದಾಟ. ಸಮಬಲದ ಹಣಾಹಣಿ. ಹಠಾತ್ತನೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ತನ್ನ ರಥವನ್ನು ಒಡ್ಡಿ ಬಲಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವೇ ನಡೆಗಳ ಅನಂತರ ಆನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ . ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು, "ಇವನಿಗೇನು ಮಂಡೆ ಸಮ ಇಲ್ಲವಾ ?" ಅಂತ ಪಿಳಿ ಪಿಳಿ ಕಣ್ಣು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಇಷ್ಟದೇವತೆಗೆ ನೈವೇದ್ಯ ಕೊಟ್ಟಂತೆ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಆನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಬಲಿಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಎದುರಾಳಿ ಆಟಗಾರ ನೋಡಿಯೇ ಬಾಕಿ! ಇಷ್ಟು ಸಾಲದು ಅಂತ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಚೆಸ್ ಬೋರ್ಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜನಂತೆ ಮೆರೆಯುವ ರಾಣಿ/ಮಂತ್ರಿಯನ್ನೂ ಎದುರಾಳಿಯ ಕುದುರೆಗೆ ತಿನ್ನಿಸಿ ಬಲಿಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು ಮೂರ್ಛೆ ಹೋಗುವುದೊಂದೇ ಬಾಕಿ. ಆಯಿತಲ್ಲ , ಈಗ ಈ ಪಂದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದದ್ದು ಯಾರು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿ ನೋಡೋಣ. ಚದುರಂಗ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಗೆಲ್ಲ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ, ಗೆದ್ದದ್ದು ಆ ಪರಿ ಬಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟವನೇ ಅಂತ. ಬೆಕ್ಕಸಗೊಂಡ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು ಇನ್ನೇನು ಕುಣಿದೇ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅನ್ನುವಂತಹಾ ಹುರುಪಿನ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವದು. ಇದು ಅಡಾಲ್ಫ್ ಆಂಡರ್ಸನ್ ಎಂಬ ಚದುರಂಗದ ಕಲಾವಿದ ಚೆಸ್ಸಿನ "ಅಜರಾಮರ ಪಂದ್ಯ"ವನ್ನು ಆಡಿದ ರೀತಿ. ಈ ಚೆಸ್ಸೆಂಬ ತಾಗಾಟ ಕೂಡಾ ಫುಟ್ ಬಾಲಿನಂತೆ, ಹೊಡಿಬಡಿ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ಟಿನಂತೆ ರೋಮಾಂಚಕ ಅನ್ನಿಸುವುದು ಇಂತಹ ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯ ಕ್ಷಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೇ. ಇಂತಹಾ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ,ಉದ್ರೇಕ,ಪುಳಕಗಳನ್ನು ಚೆಸ್ ಪ್ರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗಂದರಾವಾಗ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮಾಂತ್ರಿಕನ ಹೆಸರೇ ಮಿಖಾಯಿಲ್ ತಾಲ್.

ಹೇಳಿಕೇಳಿ ಚದುರಂಗವು ಒಂದು ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರಗಳ ಆಟ. ನಾನು ಇದನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟರೆ, ಅವನು ಅದನ್ನು ದೂಡಿದರೆ , ನಾನು ಹೀಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸಿದರೆ , ಆತ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಯಾವುದ್ಯಾವುದು ಹೇಗೇಗಾದೀತು ಅಂತ ದುಡ್ಡಿಗೆ ಬಾಯಿ ಬಿಡುವ ಬಡ್ಡಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳಂತೆ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕುವವರ ಆಟ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹೆಸರಿನವರು, ಪಟುಗಳಂತೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ನಡೆಯಿಟ್ಟರೂ ಆಮೇಲಿನ ಹತ್ತು ಹದಿನೈದು ನಡೆಗಳು ಹೀಗೀಗೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ ಅಂತ ಶುದ್ಧಾಂಗ ಯಂತ್ರಗಳಂತೆ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಂತ ಕರಾರುವಾಕ್ಕಾದ ಎಣಿಕೆಗಳು, ಒಂದೇ ತರದ ನಡೆಗಳು, ಅವವೇ ತಂತ್ರಗಾರಿಕೆಗಳ ಹಿಡಿತಗಳಿಂದ ನಲುಗಿ ಈ ಆಟ ಹಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಬೋರು ಹೊಡೆಸುವುದುಂಟು. ಇಂತದ್ದೇ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರದ ಸರಕುಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುವ ಏಕತಾನತೆಯಿಂದ, ಚೆಸ್ ಪಂದ್ಯಗಳೆಂದರೆ, ಆಕಳಿಸುವವರ ತಾಣಗಳು ಎಂದಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲವೊಂದಿತ್ತು. ಆಗಿನ ಚಾಂಪಿಯನ್ ಮಿಖೈಲ್ ಬೋಟ್ವಿನ್ನಿಕ್ ಕೂಡ, "ನನ್ನ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಚದುರಂಗವೆಂದರೆ ಕ್ರಮಾಗತವಾದ, ನಿಖರವಾದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ" ಎಂದಿದ್ದ. ಅಂತದ್ದೊಂದು ಕಾಲಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಆಟ ಆಡಿದ ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತರ ತರುಣನೊಬ್ಬನ ತಲೆ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು, ಒನ್ ವೇ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಟಾ ಹೊರಟ ಬೈಕೊಂದರಂತೆ.

ಗ್ರಾಂಡ್ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್ ಒಬ್ಬನನ್ನು ಆನೆ ಬಲಿಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬೇಸ್ತು ಬೀಳಿಸಿದಾಗಲೇ ಚೆಸ್ ಪಂಡಿತರು ಮಿಖಾಯಿಲ್ ತಾಲ್ ನೆಡೆಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣು ತಿರುಗಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು ನೋಡಿ ಬಲಿಗಳ ಜಡಿಮಳೆ. ಮೀನಿಗೆ ಗಾಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಳ ಇಟ್ಟು ಕೊಡುವಂತೆ, ಎದುರಾಳಿಗೆ, ತಿನ್ನು ಅಂತ ಕಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಒಡ್ಡಿ, ತದನಂತರ ಒಂದೇ ಸರ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಬಿದ್ದು ಉಸಿರುಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಬಿಡುವ ಅಸಲಿ ಕಸುಬು ಆತನಿಗೆ ಸಿದ್ದಿಸಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಚೆಸ್ಸು ಎಲ್ಲ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ಒಂದು ಕಲೆ, ಒಂದು ಆಕ್ರಮಣಕಾರಿ position ಸಿಕ್ಕುತ್ತದೆ ಅನ್ನುವ ಸುಳಿವು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದರೂ ಸಾಕು ನಾನು ಬಲಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆನೆಂದೇ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ತಾಲ್, ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಸಲ ಆಟವನ್ನು ಕಲೆಯಂತೆ ಅರಳಿಸಿ, ಚಂದಗಾಣಿಸಲು ಹೋಗಿ ಸೋತೇ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದದ್ದೂ ಉಂಟು. ಗೆಲ್ಲುವುದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಲ್ಲ, ಮ್ಯಾಚು ಯಾರೋ ಜೇನಿನ ಕಂಠದವರು ಪಲುಕಿದ ರಾಗವೊಂದರ ಹಾಗೆ, ಚತುರ ಬೆರಳುಗಳು ಪೋಣಿಸಿದ ಹಾರವು ಪರಿಮಳಿಸಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂಬಂತ ಧೋರಣೆ ಇದ್ದ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವರಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬ ಮಿಖಾಯಿಲ್ ತಾಲ್. ಆಟ ಸಮಬಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವಾಗ ಊಹೆಗೂ ನಿಲುಕದಂತೆ ತಿರುವು ಕೊಟ್ಟು,ಜೀವಕಳೆ ತುಂಬಿಸಿ ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವನ ಶೈಲಿಗೆ ಮರುಳಾಗಿ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು "ವಾರೆವಾ" ಎಂಬ ಉದ್ಗಾರ ತೆಗೆಯಲಿಕ್ಕೆಂದೇ ಸಾಲುಗಟ್ಟಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. The Magician from Riga ಅನ್ನುವುದು ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳು ಇವನಿಗಿತ್ತ ಬಿರುದು. ಇವನ ಊರಾದ ಈ Riga ಲ್ಯಾಟ್ವಿಯಾ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಮೊದಲು ರಷ್ಯಾದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಈಗ ಯೂರೋಪಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿರುವ ದೇಶ ಇದು(ಈ ದೇಶದ ಹಣಕಾಸು ಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿರುವವಳೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಚೆಸ್ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ). ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಅನ್ನುವುದು ಭಾರತೀಯರಿಗಾಗಿ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಕ್ರೀಡೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಚದುರಂಗವು ರಷ್ಯನ್ನರಿಗಾಗಿ ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಕ್ರೀಡೆ ಅನ್ನಬೇಕು ! ರಷ್ಯನ್ನರ ಈ ಹುಚ್ಚು ತಾಲ್ ನಿಗೂ ಬರದೇ ಹೋಗಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಬರೀ ಬೇಸ್ತು ಬೀಳಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿಷ್ಣಾತನೀತ ಅಂತ ಮೂದಲಿಸುವವರ ಬಾಯಿ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಸಲೋ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ತಾಲ್ ಉತ್ತಮ ತಂತ್ರಗಾರನೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ. ದ್ರಾವಿಡನ ತಂತ್ರ, ತೆಂಡೂಲ್ಕರ್ನ ಮೋಹಕತೆ, ಸೆಹ್ವಾಗ್ ನ ಬಿರುಸು ಸೇರಿಸಿದರೆ ಹೇಗಾದೀತೋ ಅಂತಹಾ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ ಆತನದು . ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುವಂತೆ, ಕವಿತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಟೀಕೆ, ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುವಂತೆ ಚೆಸ್ ಪಂದ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಆಟದ ಪ್ರತಿ ನಡೆಯನ್ನೂ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಿಸಿ annotation ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ, ತಾಲ್ ನ ಆಟವೊಂದರ ಎರಡು ಮೂರು ನಡೆಗಳಿಗೆ Nigel Short ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಈ annotation/ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅವನ ವರಸೆಗಳು ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ ಅಂತ ಅಂದಾಜು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು: . 20.Nd5!? "ನೀವು ಸೋತದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯ ಕಾರಣವೇ" ಅಂತ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ, "ಅಲ್ಲ, ಎದುರಾಳಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿದ್ದೇ ನಾನು ಸೋಲಲು ಅತಿಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ" ಅಂತ ಉಸುರಿ ನಗುವಂತ ಕುಶಾಲು ತಾಲ್ ನದ್ದು . ಹಾಗೆ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಮಿಖೈಲ್ ಬೋಟ್ವಿನ್ನಿಕ್, ಬಾಬಿ ಫಿಷರ್,ಬೋರಿಸ್ ಸ್ಪಾಸ್ಕಿ ,Viktor Korchnoi,Tigran Petrosianರಂತಹಾ ಚಂಡ ಪ್ರಚಂಡ ಎದುರಾಳಿಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಈ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಡಿಸಿ ಪೀಡಿಸಿದ್ದು ಆರೋಗ್ಯವೇ. ಕಿಡ್ನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪಿತ್ತಜನಕಾಂಗಗಳು ಸುಮಾರು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು ವರ್ಷ, ಇವನ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ತೊಂದರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು,ಹಣಿದು ಹೈರಾಣಾಗಿಸಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದವು, ಇವನು ಟೂರ್ನಮೆಂಟ್ ಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಇರುವುದು ಹೋಟೆಲಿನಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ, ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎನ್ನುವಂತಾಯಿತು ! ಇಷ್ಟಿದ್ದರೂ ತಾಲ್ ಕುಡಿತದ ,ಸಿಗರೇಟಿನ ದಾಸ. ಆಟ ನಡೆವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗರೇಟು ಎಳೆಯುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ, ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಈತ ಒಂದು ನಡೆ ಇಡುವುದು, ಹೊರಗೆ ಜಾರುವುದು, ಹೊಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಒಳಗೆ ನುಸುಳುವುದು, ಥಟ್ಟನೆ ಆಡಿ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಓಡುವುದು, ಹೀಗೆ ಮರ್ಕಟ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ತಾಲ್ ನ ಚೆಸ್ ಬೋರ್ಡಿನ ನಡೆಗಳ ಅರ್ಥವೇನು, ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣತೆಯೇನು , ಏನೇನು ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳಾಗಿ ಮ್ಯಾಚು ಯಾವ ದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಹೊರಳೀತು ಅಂತ ತಲೆ ಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಬೋರ್ಡಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಣ್ಣು ನೆಟ್ಟು ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದರೆ ಈ ಪುಣ್ಯಾತ್ಮನದು ಹೊರಗಡೆ ನಿರುಮ್ಮಳ ಧೂಮ ಲೀಲೆ !
ಹೀಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಸರ್ತಿ ಎರಡು ತಾಸಿನ ಪಂದ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಒಂದೂ ಕಾಲು ಘಂಟೆ ಸಿಗರೇಟಿನ ಜೊತೆ ಕಳೆದು, ಹೊರಗೆ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಡಿ ಕುಡಿದು ಅಳಿದುಳಿದ ಆರೋಗ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಸಿಗರೇಟಿನಂತೆ ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ತಾಲ್. ಬರೀ ಐವತ್ತೈದು ವರ್ಷ ಆದಾಗಲೇ ತೀವ್ರ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯವು ಈ ಬಲಿ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯ ಬಲಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದು ಖೇದಕರ. ಸ್ನೇಹ ಜೀವಿಯೂ, ರಸಿಕನೂ, ಕುಶಾಲಿನ ವರ್ಣರಂಜಿತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ತಾಲ್ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ರಂಜಿಸಿ, ನಗಿಸಿ ಹೋಗಬಹುದಿತ್ತೆಂದು ವಿಧಿಗೆ ತೋರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇರಲಿ.

ಈತನ, "ಬಲಿ ಕೊಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ರೀತಿ. ಒಂದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ಕ್ರಮ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ನನ್ನ ರೀತಿ" ಎಂಬ ಜೋಕೋಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ. The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಇವನ ಆತ್ಮಕಥೆಯೂ ಉಳಿದ ಚೆಸ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಂತೆ ಘನ ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿರದೆ ಲಲಿತ ಪ್ರಬಂಧವೊಂದರಂತೆ ಇದೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ವೃತ್ತಾಂತ ಮಜವಾಗಿದೆ : ವ್ಯಾಸುಕೋವ್ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಮ್ಯಾಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಠಿಣವಾದ ಪೊಸಿಷನ್ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು , ನನಗೋ ಒಳಮನಸ್ಸು ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಬಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬಿಡು ಅಂತ ಪುಸಲಾಯಿಸಿತು. ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಗಿಟ್ಟಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಅದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳು ಎಷ್ಟು ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟವಾದೀತೆಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ತಲೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟಿತು. ಆಗ ನೆನಪಾಯಿತು ನೋಡಿ ಒಂದು ದ್ವಿಪದಿ, "Oh, what a difficult job it was. To drag out of the marsh the hippopotamus". ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅದೇ ತಲೆಗೆ ಹೊಕ್ಕಿತು. ಅದೂ ಹೌದಲ್ಲ, ಅಂತ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಹೆಲಿಕಾಪ್ಟರು ತಂದರೆ ಹೇಗೆ ? ಕ್ರೇನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಎಳೆದರೆ ಆದೀತೇ ? ಅಂತೆಲ್ಲ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದೆ. ಅರ್ಧ ಘಂಟೆ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ತಂತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಮನದಲ್ಲೇ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿದೆ. ಉಹೂಂ ! ಹಿಪ್ಪೋಪಾಟಮಸ್ ಅನ್ನು ಎಳೆಯುವುದು ದುಸ್ಸಾಧ್ಯ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿತು. ಮತ್ತೆ ಚೆಸ್ ಬೋರ್ಡಿನ ವಾಸ್ತವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದೆ. ಈಗ ಎಲ್ಲ ನಿರಾಳವಾಯಿತು. ನಷ್ಟ ಆದೀತೋ, ಬಿಟ್ಟೀತೋ, ಪಂದ್ಯ ಕುತೊಹಲಕಾರಿ ಅಂತೂ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅಂತ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಬಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ಮರುದಿನ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯೊಂದು, "ತಾಲರವರು ನಲುವತ್ತು ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ತದೇಕಚಿತ್ತದಿಂದ ಅಳೆದು ತೂಗಿ , ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಜಾಗರೂಕತೆಯಿಂದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಹಾಕಿ, ನಿಖರವಾದ ಬಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು" ಅಂತ ಬರೆಯಿತು !

ತಾಲ್ ಒಂದು ಕಾಲಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಟೂರ್ನಮೆಂಟುಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಆಡಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಪಂದ್ಯ ಸೋಲುವುದು ಮಾಮೂಲಿ ಆಗಿತ್ತಂತೆ. ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾನೆ : ರೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಯ ಬೋಗಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದವರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಸ್ಟೇಷನ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಏನಾದರೂ ತರಬೇಕಾದರೆ ದೂರ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬಂದು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗಿತ್ತಂತೆ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ದೂರು ಕೊಟ್ಟರಂತೆ : ಇನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆ ರೈಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಯ ಬೋಗಿ ಇರಬಾರದು, ಇದ್ದರೂ ಅದು ನಡುವೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯಾದರೂ ಇರಬೇಕು. ನಾನೂ ಇದೇ ಉಪಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಪಂದ್ಯಾವಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಮೊದಲನೇ ಪಂದ್ಯ ಆಡಬಾರದು, ಏನಿದ್ದರೂ ಎರಡನೇ ಪಂದ್ಯ ಮಾತ್ರ ಆಡಿ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು.

Yes, the poverty/inequality situation is that bad ! Just google for poverty in India and you will know what I am talking about. If you had 45 Lakh Rs or more, you would be in the top 10%. I am willing to accept gifts and treat from you for the next one month if you realized just now that you are in top 50% or 10% or something like that. Another less known thing related to prosperity. When we talk about the British,we often hear about how developed they were. However that was not the case, not always.
In the 18th century, life of the common man in London was so terrible that people considered the place unlivable and decided that mass fleeing to an unknown/relatively
uninhabited island was better than living in Britain, that is how modern New Zealand was created(New Zealand was inhabited by the Maori tribe when these British arrived). All the whites in New Zealand are the British who decided to start a new and better life in a far away island, similarities to the present day Syrians is striking. Isn't it? When we think of Samsung, we often picture a cheap Chinese company that copies everything that Apple does. What we don't know is that Apple might look like a bachcha if we think about how big this this Korean giant actually is. Samsung makes satellites, robots, semiconductors, Apparel and about a hundred other distinct products. It is a bit like Tata + Reliance + Wipro. It is so HUGE that it is responsible for 20% of South Korea's entire GDP !

According to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Hold your breath, every two days human beings create as much information as we did from the dawn of time until 2003. That is right. Data produced in 2 days = Data produced from last GOD KNOWS HOW MANY THOUSAND YEARS(What he did not say however is that 99% of that is people writing brain numbingly idiotic shit and my research says that 12.34567% of that is Liberals and Modi fans throwing abuses at each other)

Lenses, megapixels and stuff is overrated, lighting and composition is underrated. People don't understand how important lighting is and how blocking and composition can dramatically alter the image. While the quality of the camera certainly makes a difference in the quality of the footage, a well-lit and carefully thought-through scene from an average camera can look way way better than a shot from a hi fi camera pointed at something poorly lit and lacking composition. When the word "Graphics" is mentioned, most people think of films like Jurassic park, Avatar, Life of Pi and Avengers. The visuals however might be misleading.
Christopher Nolan for instance does not like graphics, so most of what you saw in The Dark knight, Inception and Interstellar was not graphics! They were achieved using practical effects. David Fincher on the other hand likes Computer graphics. So Some of what you saw in films like Zodiac, The Social network and Gone Girl was actually graphics even if it did not feel that way. That leads us to the important point, when it is done well you don't really say things like, "This is graphics!" because the graphics doesn't stick out and you get immersed in the story. You all have read about that Rajasthan judge who told that a Peacock does not have sex with the peahen and the peahen gets pregnant after swallowing the tears of the peacock. Anybody who was active in facebook has seen N number of jokes on the topic. Well, here is the thing. In a way, The joke is on you! He of course was wrong about the peacock but the idea itself is not all that ridiculous. Turns out that Asexual reproduction is quite common in the animal world. Turkeys can spontaneously impregnate themselves(Called as Parthenogenesis). Hammerhead sharks, komodo dragons, mole salamanders, and an assortment of other reptiles, fish and insects can all produce offsprings without mating ! Top TV shows that I recommend

Here is the part 2 of my recommendation series. I sincerely hope you weren’t planning on doing anything productive for another year or so, because I’ve put together a list of TV series that I recommend !

Twilight Zone: This was the Great granddaddy of all TV serials. It also is the granddaddy of all serials as in "Rishtey mein to hum tumare baap hain". I know that that is a bad analogy or metaphor or whatever. But I cannot really help it when something is this good. It is an anthology series. Every episode is a separate short story involving a high concept. The stories are bizarre and weird(Wonderfully so!!) and thought provoking. A salute to Rod Serling for weaving such a wonderful diversity of intriguing plots with quirky and memorable conclusions. Watch this and thank me later for recommending.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Half of what I wrote about twilight Zone can be applied to this one also. This was a TV series made in the 60s. The master Hitch himself was the host(He also directed some episodes). It is an absolutely phenomenal series. Each episode is 25 minutes long and each episode is like a short story invovling murder or something strange,bizarre or suspenseful. It has mysteries, dark-humored tales, suspense yarns, ghost stories etc etc. Most of them usually end with an ironic twist. Watch this for wonderfully acted, superbly crafted instalments of Hitchcock inspired mysteries that are deliciously acerbic.

Jonathan Creek is awesome for those who love good mysteries with intelligent solutions by the detective. In this the detective is someone who devises magic tricks, so he uses his skills to solve impossible looking crimes. Very intelligent crimes and ingenious solutions, narrated with the classic British sense of humor. And it is criminally underrated. The show is not a Whodunnit,focus of the show is on how the impossible looking crime was committed (There is an old show called Banacek which also involves impossible looking crimes, it has an insurance investigator solving impossible crimes. Not as good as Jonathan Creek but a good and interesting watch for those who love intelligent solutions to mysteries)

Monk - This funny and heart-warming detective show features a detective who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. The lead actor's performance is terrific and it is a delight to watch this quirky and endearing character solve all those unfathomable murders. Another good thing is that the solutions to the crime are usually clever too.

24 - This is the most goose-bumpiest, fist pumpiest series that I have seen after Prison Break. Great thrills and pace and characters. I thought they might run out of steam after a while. But they never slow down. Thrills after thrills after thrills. I have finished 5 seasons now. Not one boring episode. Too good. This is the popcorn entertainment of the highest order. Again, like Prison Break this one forces most people to binge-watch.

Shooting the Past - It's a shame that this miniseries isn't all that famous. Picture this: There is a museum having a sprawling photography collection that is threatened to be destroyed as it becomes a part of a larger buyout. How do you make a something like that interesting,poignant, entertaining, and engaging ? This is how! This miniseries is guaranteed to draw you in with some terrific acting and splendid storytelling.

The Good wife - This one is for the lovers of court room drama. The show cranks out engaging episodes with an interesting court case every episode (which have a weekly payoff) while continuing an ongoing story. Combining of the stand alone episodes and a running story-line works well. The writing is great, the actors are good, and there is rarely a dull moment on the show. Challenge of writing a court room drama is to come up with an interesting case every time that doesn't feel like repetition. That is where this series excels, You get stories that are fresh,thoughtful and well-written. It has a perfect mix of courtroom drama and drama involving the lives of characters.

Damages - This is another top notch legal thriller. It's part legal thriller, part murder mystery and part cat-and-mouse show. Terrific characters and first-rate lead performances by two ladies will draw you into the complex story where nothing is what it seems. Then there are enough twists and turns and shocks and surprises to keep you wanting more. This is compelling TV at its best.

Homeland - This slow burning, compellingly written series has a plot that is a bit like Lives of Others(German) meets Brothers(Susanne Bier's Danish film). The way the
complex,multi-faceted characters slowly ratchet up the intensity and intrigue is remarkable. Don't blame me if the heart-pounding suspense makes you binge-watch one full season!

Jericho - It is a realistic what-if show that has a town that finds itself isolated after a nuclear catastrophe. Think of it as The walking dead without the zombies! A
very underrated thriller with good characters. It is gripping and fast moving and they have explored the premise nicely.

Forbrydelsen(The Killing) - This Danish crime thriller made the world start looking at Scandanavian shows. It is slow but so gripping and atmospheric that it will
haunt you for a long time. The acting is stellar, the drama is compelling and riveting. Makes for an engrossing viewing experience.

Death in Paradise is a fresh detective show. It is set in the lush tropical background of Caribbean Islands, so it has that exotic factor. Crimes and solutions are
good too. There are lots of comedic moments as well as good mysteries, and the recurring characters are wonderfully portrayed.

Vikings: This well researched and fascinating show portrays the lives of Vikings of the 8th century, like other medieval shows it is intense and filled with plenty of
action, violence, and blood. The visuals are gorgeous, characters are well written and there is enough intrigue and adventure to make it a very compelling viewing.

Borgen: This political drama from Denmark has sharp writing and good characters. This superbly acted show combines the struggles of domestic life with the grind of political life that is full of political rivals,spin doctors, media advisers and stuff like that. The result is a quality viewing experience.

Battlestar Galactica (2004 version): There is an excellent miniseries which is a prequel to the main series, you have to watch that first and then get to the series to fully comprehend what happened. It intertwines two genres - post apocalyptic and science fiction. It is the story of the crew of a spaceship called Galactic that is stranded in space, never to be able to return home. It is a sombre, Edgy, gritty, realistic series that focuses on human beings instead of space tech and flashy gizmos.

Rome: This one is set in ancient Rome and the story is about the power struggle between Pompey Magnus and Julius Caesar. Some of the things that come to your mind when you think of Game of Thrones - The nicely done production design, the action, graphic violence, sex, betrayal, murder, scheming it is all there. In that sense it was a precursor to GOT.( (It didn't have the kind of movie like big budget that GOT got) and people say that they have meticulously researched and reconstructed the Rome of that era.

I will not expand on some already famous ones that are good: Prison Break is a personal favourite for me. Breaking bad is good, Game of Thrones has a big budget movie like Production qualities, Dexter has excellent characters and clever one-liners. The walking dead keeps you hooked,House of Cards is razor sharp etc.etc.

Let us move on to some honourable mentions:
Code of a killer: This miniseries is the story of how DNA was discovered and first used for investiagting crimes.It is an interesting subject that has been narrated in
a thrilling and intriguing fashion.

Lie to me: It is about a person who can study body language, and the gestures that people unconsciously make and catch lies. Every episode involves a case or two that depend upon lie detection for resolution. I was expecting them to run out of ideas after 2-3 episodes but they managed to retain interest by coming up with cleverly imagined and inventive ideas and charming lead performances.

Nikita - This is based on Luc Besson's French film La Femme Nikita. It is a Jason Bourne style fast-paced missions of a special agent type series that is entertaining. You will enjoy it as a fun popcorn show with twists and turns as long as you don't expect anything deep or profound.

Lost - This one is a classic that keeps you on the edge of the seat, the intrigue might almost be overwhelming. But then ............... !! Once you are into 4th season you realise that those unresolved threads and unanswered questions will remain mysteries, that might leave you mighty disappointed. So I will put it in the , "Great series but......" category!

Leverage & Hustle - These are recommended for those who love cons. Every episode is a story involving a con performed by a team that makes for good popcorn entertainment(Or good time-pass as we Indians call it)

Burn Notice - This lighthearted show blends the spy genre with comedy, watch this one for some action filled with comedic,smart-ass voiceovers.
Chuck is another spy show that feels like a romantic comedy.

Mentalist has a former mentalist solving crimes, Criminal minds is about solving crimes by doing the profiling of serial killers. Both are quite good, I especially like Criminal minds as watching the profilers outwit the serial killers makes for good viewing.

Banshee: It is set in a small town and it has a Don like silly premise,but it works. Has plenty of violence, sex and badassery. All in all a good show that has a bit of Spaghetti Western vibe to it(like something that Quentin Tarantino would have liked)

Foyle's War has an interesting premise, it has a detective solving crimes during the World War 2 times, you get a mystery and a vivid description of life in Britain during World War 2 . Like in other British shows they take time to develop the characters

Recommended Stage performances

I am back to writing after a break! Thinking of writing a series of recommendation pieces and here is a quick 1st one.
Auckland Arts Festival takes place annually in Auckland (New Zealand’s largest city). This year it showcased performances from close to 1000 artists who came from 19 different countries(Most were ticketed shows), I was lucky to be there during the festival and I managed to catch a few performances.

Raiders of the Lost Ark live Orchestra: You get to see the visuals of the movie on a screen with the Dialogue and sound effects while the legendary background music by John Williams is actually being played right in front of you by a symphony orchestra! Those violins, Cellos, French Horns, trombones, xylophones on stage make you appreciate the kind of effort that goes into creating film music. It wasn't as thrilling as I wanted it to be(My seat was far away from stage which reduced the impact), I would have personally preferred an Ennio Moricone or a Hans Zimmer score, It was a memorable and unique experience in spite of that.

La Soiree: This is a famous circus show from a London based company. The twist is that it feels more like a meant to offend ADULT comedy show by AIB. The stage is similar to that of cabaret allowing them to interact with the audience. They try to mix cabaret with acrobatic stunts and pepper it with plenty of sexual humour. The result is a mad mad mad show that is weird, loud, irreverent, outrageous and funny. It is a wild, entertaining ride.

iD by Cirque Eloize: I have always wanted to watch a show by Cirque Du Soleil but I could not. I am glad that I stumbled upon this as some sort of consolation. Cirque Eloize is a Canadian troupe. What they do is called as urban circus. They blend circus with hip hop dancing/b-boying. What a spectacle it was! They keep bombarding you with one world class stunt after another at a breakneck speed for 2 frenzied hours, the pulsating music makes the frenetic action all the more exciting. And then there is a "you have to watch it to believe it" type of final act that makes the crowd burst into collective oohs and aahs. Two thumbs way up for this one.

Encounter by UK theatre company Complicite: This show/play tells the story of a National Geographic photographer who got lost in the Amazon jungle. There is just one performer on stage and he manages to surprise,engage and mesmerize you. The USP of the show however is "sound". They use cutting-edge sound design technology to a dazzling effect. You wear hi-tech headphones, There is 3D audio, sound editing, looping, Foley artistry, voice modulation and what not! They use every audio technology trick in the book but they don't stop there ; It is not just technical gimmickry. The narration is full of wit, intelligence and dry humour and the style is like that of a Nolan film. There are layers, shifting timelines, the nature of reality gets questioned, the question of what is real and what is manufactured keeps popping up. I can’t recommend it enough.

Krishnan's Dairy - This one is a cheat since I saw it in Ranga Shankara in Bengalooru. I am including it here as it is performed by a company called Indian Ink which is a New Zealand based theatre company. It is a one-man play that shows the life of an Indian couple who run a small shop in New Zealand. The awe-inspiring, spell binding solo performance is the highlight of the play. It will charm you with simplicity like a Majid Majidi film. It manages to be both hilarious and moving which is a rarity. The show that I watched got a well deserved standing ovation.

Jealous much? Sure you are. Recommend some good stage performances to me and get even.

GST made easy

What exactly is GST? If you are a poor soul like me who tried to search answers for questions like that one, you would have smacked your forehead and forgotten the question itself because of the sheer amount of technical gobbledygook thrown at you. If you are the kind of average, nontechnical person who can not even open a computer without using a hammer and chainsaw, don't worry. I have simplified things in the tradition of my "Made easy" series for you.

There are some things in life that it is better to just not even think about. And one of those things is Economics. Tax obviously is another such thing. Taxes are as inevitable as death they say. The only difference between death and taxes is that the Govt. doesn't meet every year to make death worse. As someone had quipped, "A fool and his money are soon parted. The rest of us wait until income tax time."

All taxes are classified as either Direct Taxes or Indirect Taxes. That personal income tax that you pay is a direct tax because you directly pay it to the Govt, Companies pay corporate tax and the rich pay wealth tax. On the other hand when you buy a parle G biscuit packet you do not directly pay the taxes to the Govt, the shopkeeper or somebody else does, you pay the MRP to him and he pays a portion of it to the Govt, that is an indirect tax. You don't really have to have an IQ of 445 to understand that.

There are various philosophies on how this should be done. There was this guy called Robin Hood as per English folklore who, according to legend, used to rob from the rich and give it to the poor. One philosophy called "Ability to Pay Principle" advocates that the Govt should be a bit like Robin Hood. Let us say that Shah Rukh Khan is crazy about Parle G biscuits and he buys thousand packets a year. I also do the same for instance. This might cost 5000 Rs. The MRP is inclusive of all taxes, meaning we end up paying indirect taxes for this, assume it to be 200 Rs. For SRK this might be just 0.000001 % of his income. But for a below poverty line guy this 200 Rs might be half of his monthly income. Isn't this injustice? BPL guy has to pay all he has, but SRK just has to pay 0.000001 %. This is kind of why the "Ability to Pay Principle" argues that there should be a way to make SRK pay more so that the BPL guy can spend the money he has on other essential things like gambling and alcohol! Now you know why we have Income tax slabs structured like that. This Robin Hood style of taxing is called as Progressive tax. Direct taxes like Income tax and Corporate tax are progressive. Indirect taxes like the Parle G tax are called as regressive taxes.

Can't they get all sentimental about justice and eliminate Indirect taxes then so that we only have progressive taxes? Not really. It's all right to save money, but too many are trying to save it from people they owe it to. Raja Harishchandra never told a lie they say, what they don't tell you is that Harishchandra never had to fill out a tax declaration form! Nothing makes a person more modest about his income than the time to fill out a tax form. The difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion is Jail, but such things have never stopped people from evading it anyway. Hardly 1% of our people i.e. only salaried bakras pay it, Imagine how difficult it would be to collect it from say another 50 crore people. Income tax Department might have to employ so many people that the cost of running the IT Dept itself might be more than the tax collected ! Indirect taxes are easier to collect and all 120 crore+ people are forced to pay them when they buy and sell things. So indirect taxes are required. GST is a tax reform that deals with Indirect taxes, it has nothing to do with Direct taxes like Corporate or Income tax.

In Sholay they show Gabbar and what happened to Thakur before they show what Jay and Viru do, don't they? Similarly we will flashback before we talk about GST. Sales tax was the Gabbar that we had. Let us assume that the Sales tax is 10% and you are running a kidnapping business. To run this business you might need Guns. The guy who made it might have used stainless steel, plastic, wood etc. To get all these he might have spent 10,000 Rs. 10% tax on this is 1000 Rs. He then prepares a gun and sells it to you for 15,000 Rs. You pay 10% as Tax, making the tax 1500 Rs. The problem here is that the guy who made the gun has included his tax of 1000 in the 15K price, your tax of 1500 includes a component that came from the 1000 that he added. You are paying tax on tax. This is called as cascading effect.

They introduced a concept called VAT to solve this cascading problem. VAT stands for Value Added tax. Basically the price of the gun is more than the Sum of prices of Steel, Plastic etc. This is because you can't kidnap people by showing them a piece of steel or wood or plastic, but you can do that by using a gun, Gun has more VALUE. This value was added by the dude who processed Steel, wood etc, assembled it and produced a gun. He added value. VAT says that only this value that he added should be taxed. He paid 11K, he sold it for 15K, So he added a value of 4K, only this is to be used for taxing. Cascading of taxes can be eliminated this way by VAT.

There is another catch here. If this guy has to pay credit only for the Value added(4K), there should be proof that the tax for 11K has already been paid in the previous stage. This can only happen if the steel seller and plastic seller provide proper bills, if he doesn't give the bill then the gun guy has to give the full tax. My guess is that the gun guy will show his gun and ask the Steel guy to produce bills. This way VAT and GST try to address tax evasion.

But there is more. Say you have the Gun factory in Bihar. The dude would have paid an excise tax(manufacturing tax) of 10%. (Again, if the manufacturer had purchased steel from Karnataka, he would have paid Karnataka’s state taxes on buying Steel)You would have loaded the guns in a truck, speaking of trucks, have you seen the long lines of trucks in the check posts near state borders? There is an entry tax at every state. If your truck moves through four states and you pay an entry tax of 10% at every state border. Then the seller again adds his profit and you pay 10% on his offer. This is insane! It's like tax on tax on tax on tax on tax! Not to mention the losses caused by delays in trnsportation because of such long lines(Imagine the truck owner getting a loan at 30% to finance things from a rowdy loan shark! He can't return it until he gets paid by the buyer)
And have you seen the kind of houses these Sales tax inspectors have built? When getting bribes is easy people build houses like that. VAT doesn't address this, GST does.

Another problem is that the taxation is different in every single state for every different thing. Another problem happens when states promise X years of tax free status to new factories. Clever companies simply move their entire factories after X years to another state to take advantage of this. Another thing is the problem of Imported goods. Now the tax on domestic goods is higher, imported goods have a low tax, with GST they will levy the same tax for imported goods(Does that remind you of Make in India?)

Right now there are so many taxes with so many clauses that nobody really understands what exactly is going on. So many state taxes and central taxes only add to the fun. So the next time(There won't be a next time) your CA friend says that he understands these umpteen number of taxes, consider the possibility that he is lying on your face. GST tries to address this having a simple tax, that is UNIFORM and is easy to calculate and collect and understand.

One more thing is Service tax. As a part of your kidnapping business you might have employed people whose job is to make calls and threaten people and negotiate ransoms. They are not producing any physical good like a gun, They are producing a Service. Tax on this is called as Service tax. Again the cascading can occur because VAT does not cover Service taxes. GST tries to solve this(Think about the full form of GST - Goods and SERVICES Tax). This way GST is like a sequel to VAT with a much bigger star cast and a better script that addresses the plot holes!

GST introduces 5 rates - 0,5,12,18 and 28%. With our SRK story it is easy to understand why. 0 and 5% are for things that the poor guy needs(Essential items). 18 and 28% taxes are for things that our BPL guy doesn't probably need. These are for people who can afford to pay more. Have you ever seen a poor guy paying 1200 a month for phone or internet bill? No, only upper middle class and above can afford that. 28% especially targets the Shahrukhs of the world(Luxury items). It's the Govt playing Robin Hood. "A fine is a tax for doing wrong and a tax is a fine for doing well", afterall!

All said, GST is not really about making things cheaper or costlier. It is about collecting tax from more people, it is about making taxation simpler and uniform. Some things might be cheaper and some costlier, that is only a side effect, not the main intention. The idea is that having 5 taxes is simpler than having 35 taxes with hundred different rates. It is also intended increase the ease of doing business. The whole thing started in 2004 and it took so much time to get things done. As mentioned already, GST tries to replace 35 taxes with 5 for instance. One problem with that is that States lose many of their taxes. That meant hundreds of meetings and negotiations with states on how it is to be handled, you know how these meetings generally go, don't you? Also, That is sort of why there is a state GST and a Central GST and an IGST(for interstate things). State GST is to make up for the money that states lose.
Nothing ever happens here without a number of ifs and buts. It is the same with GST, many things are excluded, making it more complicated than it should have ideally been. That way it is a simple but complicated system!

I will end this with a joke:

It's too early to say whether GST will do everything that it is intended to do. You can never underestimate the ingenuity of our people when it comes to jugaads and bending rules. I think it will do good to a good extent, let us wait and watch.
