Uppi 2 Coaching Classes to start in KG Road

A faking news style piece by me on the much awaited, much hyped film Uppi 2 that stunned everyone with the upside down Cut-out and teaser:

After having realised that there is a huge demand for some explanations on all the confusing terms and posters and cut outs of Upendra's latest film Uppi 2, Mr Venkateshi from Magadi road has come up with a plan to open Uppi 2 coaching classes near Nartaki theatre, Bengaluru.

"As the film is releasing on Friday, A fresh batch will start this Wednesday", he announced. "After having spoiled the youngsters with all the LKG, UKG, 7th Std, SSLC, PUC, IIT-JEE, IAS and CAT and sundry other coaching classes the time has come for me to enter the film industry", he said. "People are not understanding the screenplays written by these new age film-makers like Rakshith Shetty and good old Upendra, and that causes frustrations", he fumed.

First 2 classes will teach word combinations like Naanu, Neenu, Unknownu, Naanu annonu unknownu, Neenu unknownu annonu, Neenemba naanu, naanemba neenu, neenu kandante naanu, naanu kandante neenu, Avanu kandante naanu mattu neenu and various other permutations and combinations of nouns, pronouns, proper nouns, gerunds, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and every other combination from Wren and Martin Grammar books.

There will be separate classes for those who have just seen the posters, for those who have watched the teasers and for those who have watched the film just once.
"Those who have watched the film more than once will be admitted to a different batch", he promised. A guest lecturer will be taking a session on understanding a film that has a film within a film within a film in a reverse screenplay format happening inside a flashback all the while being a metaphor for a symbolic thing.

A special gym instructor will join to teach people as to how the necks are to be bent for ulta viewing of the upside down shots in the film. Some die-hard fans who were really excited about the "Aham Naaneshwara" chant have enrolled to the Wednesday classes demanding that they want to know what it means.

There will also be special auto rickshaw services to take confused people coming out of the theatres directly to the class where an equally confused teacher will explain the meanings/interpretations and hidden meanings of what they just saw. The autos will be parked just outside the exit gate of Nartaki theatre with the "Excuse me please" sign boards.

Greece Debt Crisis made easy!!

I wrote this elsewhere on July 15th. Thought there might be others who would want to read this. This was my answer to someone who wanted an easy to understand/intuitive explanation about Greece's Debt crisis. Here is an oversimplified, easy to understand, layman's version of what happened to Greece and what the fuss is all about. This was written for a movie group, hence the movie related analogy.
Assume that Greece is a film producer from Gandhi Nagara in Bengalooru, India.
1.All producers borrow money from financiers(All countries borrow money with the help of Govt. bonds). Greece also did.
2. A producer has to earn more than what he has borrowed with the help of ticket sales(Countries collect Taxes)
3.Now a producer has to spend this borrowed money on a movie. But this dude Greece spent it on stuff like 5 star hotels, resorts, free Switzerland trip to hero etc( Greece gave exorbitant salaries to Govt employees, ridiculously high pensions, spent money on useless infra projects etc. instead of using it to boost the GDP)
4.No theatres give the ticket price back to this Greece guy. All audiences are entering cinemahalls without tickets(Massive Corruption, Nobody pays taxes in Greece, tax evasion is unimaginably high)
5.You can get money for low interest rates if you join nirmapakara sangha(Association of producers) [Joining Euro Zone]
6. To join you must be eligible. You should have produced at least 1 hit and you should possess 2 crore in cash. Greece pushes one film and shows cooked up excel sheets projecting a 2 crore balance( Greece lies to Eurozone about debts,GDP and stuff)
7. Now nobody is ready to lend money to Greece. And interest rates are doubled for him. Sangha(Association) helps him but asks him to cut all the budget and finish film within 1 crore. (Euro zone demands Greece to cut all expenses and increase tax)
8. Greece thinks that making a low budget film will only hurt him. Greece asks a 10 Crore loan so that he can make another big budget film and bounce back(Greece asks for a bailout so that it can get the economy going)
9. A biggie like Rockline Venkatesh (Germany) is angry. He says, "we can’t give another 10 Crore loan so that he can pay the 15 crore loan he already has". Greece argues that only way to repay loan is to make another big film which is possible only if he gets a new loan!! about debts,GDP and stuff)

To Dub or not to dub is the question!!!

With the news about a dubbed film being ready for release, the dubbing debate has resurfaced. Should Kannada film industry allow dubbing or not is the question. The answer is not an easy one.

Let me also take an anticipatory bail. I am neither completely for Dubbing, nor completely against it.

To put things in perspective:

The articles by Udaya Marakini and Pawan have covered most of the points(Check this discussion in Gandhadagudi ) So, read this as a companion piece to those 2. I will try to cover what they have not already covered.

I guess, this whole issue is about what will happen to the B and C center audience if Dubbing comes. Cosmo Kannadigas are not watching Kannada films anyway. Apart from an occasional Uppi, Guru Prasad, Rakshith Shetty, Pawan kumar or Yograj Bhat film they don't even know much about the Kannada films anyway. At max ,they might watch some Puneeth and Sudeep films. Neither are they for Machu longu nor are they fans of SRK, Darshan and other heroes with mass appeal. Abbabba andre once in a while they might watch films of good looking heroes like Diganth or Chethan. They are happy watching Hollywood and Bollywood movies. A tiny fraction of them might even be watching Tamil/Malayalam/Telugu.

Dubbing or no dubbing will not make any difference to KFI as far as this cosmo kannadiga class is considered. It is like the guy who buys Hyundai cars. The debate is about whether Ambassador Cars should be allowed or not. It will not make any difference to him since he is not using Ambassador cars anyway. He is buying Hyundai cars and he will continue to do so. Ambassador or no ambassador will not mean anything to him.

People like me will watch Hollywood films in English itself. I will watch French/Italian/Spanish/Iranian films in the original language with subtitles.

So, the argument boils down to: What will happen to the B and C Centers? Will the mass stop watching Kannada films if dubbing comes? The answer to this can only be speculative. That is why I am neither for dubbing, nor against it. A skilled debater can argue either way as we can see from countless articles quoted in the Gandhadagudi forum 's thread that I have mentioned above.

Some points that I can think of:

For:
1. I want this remake culture to stop. You remake good films like Autograph and Aptha Mithra once in a while. Such remakes once in a while are welcome and necessary. But our stars are doing remakes afte remakes after remakes. Vishnu Vardhan, Ravi mams, Sudeep, Puneeth and Darshan are to be blamed mainly for this. Salute to SRk in this matter for taking a bold stand. I want dubbing to discourage the remake trend. And scene lifting might also be discouraged.

2. Capitalistic theory: Competition is good. Competition results in better products. If you sit in your home, protected by your parents, you will not grow or become good. It is when you go out and compete with the best that you learn. Take Pre-Globalization era India. Ambassador, Maruti 800/Omni and Fiat were the only cars available. After globalisation we have so many options. Now Maruthi has to face competition. they did not close their factory. Competition has only made them better. They have responded by reinventing and producing new cars which can compete with other Global brands. They have released stuff like Alto also. We want KFI to be like Maruti. Let us compete with Telugu and Tamil. We might lose a few battles initially but eventually we will learn to beat them. We will be forced to make stories that are better than Tamil/Telugu films.

3. Who are you to dictate what the audience can and can not see? Let them make a choice. Can you stop people from using iPhones because local phone manufacturers don't want you to get iPhones? We will say, let the local guys produce something better than iPhones and we will but it. Don't force us. Give us that freedom. We will buy whatever we like. If you want us to buy your product then create something that will attract me. Don't make remake films like Bul Bul, Yare Koogadali or Varada nayaka and blame kannada audience for not coming to theaters.
Regarding lip sync: I will reject the films with bad lip syncs. Don't decide for me. I will decide whether I want to watch a lip synced film or not. Films with bad lip syncs will irritate me and I will naturally reject them.

4. Situation back in the 60s was different. There was no such thing called KFI. It was Madras which was everything. We were not at all organised, there were no professionals, no stars, nothing. So, A Na Kru and Raj Kumar and all had a valid point. Now it is an established film industry. We are very well established now. Let the Box Office Sultans and Abhinaya chakravartis and all face Vikram,Surya, Mahesh babu and such. If they really are Box Office chakravartis and Abhinaya specialists then they will emerge victorious.

5. Watching films is more like an addiction, abhyasa bala. Just because Pizzas and burgers came we will not stop eating Dose, Idli and rice. SImilarly those who are addicted to kannada film will continue to watch kannada films. SRK fans will watch his next big films no matter whether a Tom Cruise or Pawan kalyan or Amitabh Bachchan has a Co release. This abhyasa, addiction will not go anywhere.

6. Culture, language and all: Firstly, KFI does not do justice to the culture and language of karnataka. It just shows the culture of Bangalore and Mandya. Karnataka is not limited to mandya and bangalore. There are other parts also. KFI has not even bothered to check what people in other parts do and how they speak. Our culture was alive long before the film industry came and it will be alive in future also.

7. Raj Kumar at least spoke in crystal clear kannada and taught people how to talk in kannada. What have today's heroes done? They just take 3/4 crore and act. They are rarely concerned about creativity, bhaashe and all. They are busy protecting their image and making money. They have acted like businessmen. A businessman is concerned only about profit. Heroes are only concerned about Box Office, Image, money and such.
Even the Munis and Manjus are concerned with how much money they can make, nobody here is really concerned about kannada. They are using kannada sentiments for their business/ money making. So, don't ask for our sympathies now. We will also act like the customers of a businessman. Let the best businessman with the best product flourish, even if he is from some other state.

Against:

1. We already have given half of our theaters to Tamil, telugu and all. Now you guys want to snatch the rest of theaters also for your dubbed films? Where will we release Kannada films? In Mangala Graha?

2. You can not compare Kannadigas with Tamil/telugu guys. A telugu guy will even watch a dabba(mediocre) film. An ordinary film like Dookudu will also make 40 crore business there. We are nirabhimaanis, Kannadigas would have been very harsh on a movie like that. Their screen density and movie watching populations are high resulting in a much bigger market for Tamil and Telugu. So, we face a real danger of extinction in the long run. Spare us.

3. Competition is between equals. Because of our nirabhimaana, inferiority complex, meekness and various other factors, KFI is already like a person with a knee injury. If you ask a person with knee injury to compete with Usain Bolt, it is not equality. It is like they are already on shoulders of a giant and we are still crawling. Competition will destroy us. Can we ask a 5 year old kid to compete with a 25 year old guy? Competition will destroy the kid. Kid needs protection.

4. Try for a job in Europe. You will see that only Permanent residents of that region are allowed. If they allow open market policy then people there will be unemployed. They protect their people first. Even in Singapore PRs are preferred 1st. This is natural. Let us say that your son gets very low scores in the exams. He is not doing well. Do you say ask him to perish because he can not compete with others? Do you say, "Let him fail because he is not doing well"?
You give some concession to him. You give some concession to him. You protect him and in the future he might become the best engineer/Doctor/Lawyer/teacher/Social worker/Poet/writer/businessman whatever.
KFI is like this son. It is ours after-all. These are our people. Let us give some discount/concession to them.

5. In Argentina, they watch dubbed versions of Hollywood films. There is no such thing as an Argentinean film industry. Dubbing has almost killed the Argentinean film industry(May be dubbing was like condom, it did not even allow the Argentinean film industry to take birth), Do you want Karnataka to be another Argentina?

6. We all saw how our distributors and multiplexes inflicted injustice upon a small Kannada film like Rangitaranga by snatching theaters and not giving prime time shows, by not displaying the show-timings etc.(Check the details here: Justice for Rangitaranga). This problem will only aggravate with dubbing. When a Baahubali releases, we will have 300 shows for the Telugu version, 100 shows for Hindi and Tamil versions and another 200 shows for the Kananda dubbed version. Only way to do this is to snatch theaters from a film like Rangitaranga. Stars will not face this problem as they already have a big fan base. Filmmakers like Anup,Rakshith, Pawan, Giri Raj will certainly see theaters and shows being snatched for the next big Telugu film!! Let us agree that the world is not always fair. There is no level playing field and the big often kills the small unfairly. Rangitaranga had overwhelmingly positive reviews and it had nothing but "Sold Outs" mind you, it still had to lose theaters. A Kannada film made with a budget of 3 Crores will always lose theaters to a hyped up 100 Crore Telugu/Tamil/Hindi/English film. This will happen no matter how good the film is. Rangitaranga losing theaters to Baahubali is a very good case in point.

ನಾನು ಸಚಿನ್ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ತಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದ  ಒಂದು ನುಡಿ ಹಾರ :

19 Reasons to like Shankara Nag

Note: I wrote this in Gandhadagudi Forum as a response to someone who asked what has Shankar Nag done. Hence it is not written like an article.

1. Personal charm: Why Raj Kumar became so legendary? He was much more than just an actor. People considered him as a role model in real life. Same with Shankara, he was much more than an actor. One more similarity is that he was simple and humble like Raj Kumar. Like Raj, he was a sweet, soft and genuinely likable guy. Again like Raj Kumar he would come on time to sets, he would treat everyone nicely without showing starry airs.
One or 2 Examples:
Ramesh Guru Raj Rao had to compose music for one Shankara's plays. Shankara was already a star by then. When Ramesh tried to address Shankara with bahu vachana, Shankar interrupted and told, "Ayyo adella beda, Shankara anta kareeri."
They were in Calcutta for the play. They had booked a flight ticket only for Shankar. He gave the ticket to someone else and came with the troupe in a train.

Another day, my relative who was working in the film industry was going in a city bus near Shivananda circle, suddenly one guy came running with a bag in his hand, jumped and got on the foot-board. He was taking something to a film lab for processing. In the next stop or something he got down and started running. That guy was someone who was already a BIG star! Shankara it was!!

2. Metro : He had seen the tube in London and had conceived the same for Bangalore. Some say that he brought engineers from Japan/Germany to get the survey done for the plan, some say he got it done from the Geological survey department. Whatever it is, he did get a survey done and submitted the report to the Govt of Karnataka during the times of Rama Krishna Hegade/Bommai. He spent 4-5 lakhs from his pocket for this project in those days(This is like spending 20 lakhs today). How many actors will spend 10-20 lakh for the metro project or any public work?? How many have such visions? Even chief ministers did not have such visions.

3. Low cost housing: He saw the ideas of an Austrian company called EVG, those guys were using some sheets with which you could construct houses with just 45000 Rs in those days. What a socialist!! In a country with 25% people near the poverty line it was such a good idea. Our poor people can benefit a lot from this idea even today. He had actually built one model house in Yelahanka, adu eegloo ide ante. His plan was to work with HUDCO and get this done. Nam politicians ishtu olle kelsa ella yelli madtare? KFI will not even dream of such things, they are busy making money using remakes!

4. Sanket Studio: All the recording work was being done in Madras those days. Shankara was the first one to start recording here. He saw the studios in Mumbai and did something similar in bangalore. He was the first guy to start computerised Sound recording in Kannada. He brought musicians and technicians from Madras and asked them to train local guys about how recording is done. If local guys are doing this and we have so many studios in Karnataka, say thanks to Shankara!!

5. Theatre: He also had formed a theatre group called Sanket. He directed plays like Naga Mandala, Barrister, Sandhya Chaaya, Nodi Swaami navirode heege and all. His dream was to build an intimate theatre in Karnataka and make it affordable to all.
Arundhati Nag realised this dream with Ranga Shankara. The ticket cost is just 100 Rs or max 200 Rs just because it was Shankar's dream to give it at low cost. Theatre rent is just 2500-5000 Rs for people who are performing. They can easily charge 10000-15000 Rs. It is a high class, posh theater with great sound and light systems, but they have kept it affordable. This also is because Shankara wanted to help artists by giving low cost options. Arundhati just realized his vision.
The stage concept is also different there, it is a thrust stage. This is also a fulfilment of Shankar's dream I guess, he wanted it to look like the intimate theatres he saw in foreign countries.

6. Farmhouse/Dairy: He had an idea for dairy farming/farm house. He bought some place in Singasandra/ Hosur road and actually did dairy farming.

7. Country Club: This was another dream that he actually realised. This is the precursor of the resorts that we have today. This was meant for hi fi society folks.

8. Medi-vac idea: Shankar had a project to give medical facilities to villagers by having diagnostic centres near villagers and by giving some pick up drop service using helicopters, I am not sure what the exact plan was. But he had an interesting idea.

9. Nandi betta: He saw some amusement park in Canada and thought of having one such near Nandi betta with garden, theme rides and stuff. He also wanted a rope way to Nandi betta and wanted to build a 5 Star hotel on top of betta. This rope-way/ theme park can be implemented even today.

10. Brick factory: Power plants were producing a waste called Fly ash. Shankara came across a plan to produce bricks using this fly ash. He wanted to use wind mills or something, there was a plan to do that without using electricity. Paperwork was done for this, but he passed away after that. His idea again was to help the poor with cheap bricks for building houses.

11. Garment factory: He had another idea to make textile and export it to foreign countries. not sure if there was anything unique about it.

12. Fly overs/ underpass: He had also suggested that Bengluru needs Fly overs and underpasses to handle the increasing traffic. He had shared the idea with Rama Krishna Hegade. He told this 15 years before SM Krishna thought of having fly overs after the damage had already been done. What a visionary!!

13. Multiplexes: This was another idea he had. Not sure how true it is. If it is true then he was 25-30 years ahead of his times!!

14. Malgudi days: With this he got a never before kind of acclaim all over India. It became a sensation. Perhaps he is the only director from KFI to get a nationwide acclaim like this. Puttanna, Upendra, Desai and all were limited to Karnataka/South India. They did not get national level recognition like he did. This gave him the much deserved satisfaction, he was finally happy that people accepted his talent.

15. Bridge cinema: This guy made bridge films like Accident, Ondu muttina kathe and Minchina Ota. This was even before the likes of Pawan Kumar and Rakshith Shetty and all were born. These films were neither fully commercial, nor were they ART films. There were ART films and there were commercial films in Kannada, Shankara probably bridged the gap with bridge films.

16. Intellectual/International level exposure and ideas: Shankara was friends with YNK(Celebrated editor of Prajavaani, guru of Jogi and Vishweshwar Bhat), Girish Karnad and such. He used to watch world cinema in those pre internet days. He used to read authors like Bertolt Brecht (Germany), Gabriel Garcia Marquez(Argentina), Pablo Neruda(Chile), Steinbeck(Ondu muttina kathe was based on a novel by him), Dostoyevsky(Russia) and such. He would read Nobel prize winning authors like Albert Camus and such.

He was getting these international level ideas and it was very difficult for people here to appreciate his ideas as people here were not that advanced like him. My relative who worked in KFI those days told that people in his friends circle were also no match for his intellectual level, they were not able to appreciate his ideas. Probably people like YNK and Girish Karnad were matching this intellectual wavelength that he had. Sorry, no such luck in film industry!!

This was a bit like Srinivas Ramanujan telling his Maths theories to people in Govt office in Kumbha Konam, they did not get head or tail of what Ramanujam was telling, they could not understand that he was having world class ideas. Finally Professor Hardy gave that recognition to him in England. Shankara also must have felt like that - a wrong man in a wrong place, way ahead of his times.

16. Multi faceted director: Shankara would act, write screenplays, read and direct. He wore other caps also. He would take a harmonium and start singing. He would start designing the sets. Would come with innovative set ideas with the budget constraint he had. No distributor was ready to buy Anantha Nag/ MS Sathyu film Bara. Like a producer/distributor he made sure that the film got a theatrical release. Shankara had also written a travelogue after visiting Singapore.

17. Speed, Energy: He was moving like a huchch naayi(mad dog) running inside a rocket on fire!! His thinking was even faster, by the time others got started with a Yamaha bike this guy would have reached Hassana in a bullet train. He did all these things listed in a span of 10-11 years. This is not the story of an 80 year old grandpa. He did all this at the age of 36. Not to forget, he acted in some 90+ films. Imagine doing these many projects, coming with these many ideas and acting in 90 films in a span of 10 years. He seemed to have 48 hours in a day.

18. Awards and Accolades: Shankara was in the league of Kasaravalli and Naga Bharana in this aspect. I think Kasaravalli, Naga Bharana and Shankara are the Top 3 award winning film makers of Karnataka. He won 2 National awards. Accident won the Indian Silver Lotus at the National Film Awards. Also, it won the State award for the best film.  Won 7 State awards including Second Best Film and Best Screenplay. Nodi Swami navirode heege - Again won the state award in the best film category.
"22 June 1897" is a Marathi film written by Shankara. This film won the Indian Silver Lotus at the National Film Awards. This film has been included in the selected collection of Indian films in the US Library of Congress. This film should have come in Kannada.

19. Hrudayavanta: Did not take proper money for half of his films. As per Anantha, he did not get paid properly for 45+ films. At least 35+ he himself gave concession seeing producer's problems. For some he got 30-40% payment, for some he got 50-60%. Some he did not take anything. Only hero to help so many producers I think. Being the hero in 90+ films he had a big loan when he died. Arundhati took 10 years to clear all the loans. This was partially due to the investments he had done on his dream projects and partially because he was not strictly taking money from producers.

Note: I have compiled the info from 15-20 different resources to form what I think is a coherent whole.

Think outside the Box(Office)

What makes a film a Success?? 100 Crores in Box Office?? 200 Crores?? If you are the type of person who breaks into a Lungi dance looking at the weekly movie box office reports of those Salman Khan films, damn you!! I can bet all the money in my empty pocket that you consider all those Anurag kashyap films to be flops. You must have considered films like Ulidavaru kandante and Gombegala Love as failures. Gomebegala Love? That was a flop, right? Tony? Did not work in Box office, right? Yes, they did not work in the Box office, So what ??!! Sometimes we should not give a damn and how I wish our media understood this!! You think I am insane?? Read on!!

Declaring that a film is a success just because it has crossed 200 crores is like calling an Elephant the most successful animal because it is so damn BIG. Here is the Good news!! There is life beyond Box Office, Yes, a film that is not a Box Office success can also be successful.

Jump back to year 1942. While we were busy with Quit India movement Hollywood released a film called Casablanca. It was a disaster in the box office. It flopped. End of story?? No. A BIG NO. Check Imdb Top 250. That film is within 50th rank 70 years after the release. Today it is universally accepted as an all time classic love story.  It has full critical acclaim. There were surely many box office successes in 1942. But have you heard of them? Does anyone remember them? Do they matter? No. Forget box office. Take a bus to Domlur from Maratha Halli. Near Domlur you will see an apartment. Name of that apartment is Casablanca! That is how much a box office disaster can rise. There is something called shelf life. We also have to consider the likability. Box Office is nothing but popular opinion. Popular opinion is not always right.

There is another example called Shawshank Redemption. It was a Box Office failure. Today it is the number 1 in Imdb Top 250, It is a number 1 with 11 lakh+  votes. It is one of the most liked movies in the world today. What was the box office status of that film? Mega flop.Same can be said about Mera Nam Joker which is considered to be a classic today. Mental Manja has earned more than Muttina Haara in box office probably. Which one is better?

If we need a term to categorize these films then we can use the term "Cult Classic". In English they often have these cult classics. Some of them turn out to be classics later. A cult classic is usually a Box Office failure(Not always), Many might not have seen it. But a section of audience has seen it and that section is crazy about the film. They hail it as a great film.

Take Muttina Haara. Rajendra Singh Babu spent 1.75 crore for Muttina Haara, he lost 1 crore. It was a disaster from that POV. But even today people ask him to make another film like Muttina Haara. Recently when he went to a Petrol bunk people asked him to make another Muttina Haara. Makers want this type of praise. That is why they make films. Babu told that if he had invested that 1.75 crore in Real estate he would have got 500 crores by now. But happiness given by that praise is much greater than the happiness of 500 crores by Real estate. Makers want their films to be liked, understood, loved and appreciated.

There is an awesome film called Fightclub in Hollywood. It had earned 100 million dollars upon release. 100 million is nothing, it just earned some profit, not a Big hit in any sense. Now Fight Club is being considered as an all time great film. You are not qualified to be a movie buff if you have not seen Fight Club. Hollywood fans will laugh at you if you have not seen Fight Club. In Imdb it has the 10th rank now among the Imdb Top 250. In rotten tomatoes it has 150+ reviews and the rating is 80+. In Netflix it is one of the highly rented films even today. Compare this to Twilight Saga series. Teenage girls are crazy about these films. They earn in the range of 400 to 800 million dollars. There are many Movie buffs who will be ready to pound your laptop into thousand little pieces if it has Twilight movies . Movie buffs regularly create Twilight jokes. But every Twilight film has earned 6/7 times more than Fight Club in Box Office. So much for Box Office!!

There is a story about singer Bala Murali Krishna. One day he was sitting in an aeroplane ante. Suddenly one guy came to him and touched his feet. He asked, "Shall we take off"? That guy was the pilot!! What artists want is things like this. Nobody cares about how much money Bala Murali Krishna made.

Think of what motivates Sachin tendulkar? He was stinking rich. He made truckloads of money. But why did he still play till the age of 40? He played because he likes it. When he plays a good innings that gives the satisfaction which can not be given by hundreds of crores of money that he has. He wants people to scream, "Sachin....!! Sachin....!!!!"

Why NRN came back to Infosys in spite of having thousands of Crores in the form of Infosys shares? Because he can not tolerate if someone says that Infy is not doing well. He enjoys taking Infy to new heights. He likes being in power. He likes when people praise him, he likes it when people praise Infy. Why Deve Gowda is in politics even today? He has made thousands of crores. he can sit back and enjoy that money. But he is still in it because he likes being in politics. He can not tolerate the success of his enemies. He likes it when his children come to power, he wants people to praise him, he wants people to praise his children.

Now take the other side. What about Rohit Shetty who broke so many Box Office records? He himself confessed that he used to go to depression after reading the reviews. Those 100 crores did not stop him from going to depression. Basically you make films to get praise, to impress people, to have people say "Wow!! What creative person Rohit shetty is". Now it has become a habit for him and he has developed a thick skin and ignores the reviews.
One last example from Kannada. Sarathi was a blockbuster hit, right? But what did Dinakara Toogudeepa feel about it? Nothing much!! He even disowned the film!! He told people not to consider it as a Dinakar film and that it is purely a Darshan film. He probably got more satisfaction from a flop like Nava Graha.

I am not denying that Box Office success is important, but that is not the only criterion. There is life beyond Box Office. How do you measure the success of MTR? Is it by how much money they made or is it by how they made you smack your lips because of the kind of food they served? You don't fall for a girl based on how much money she makes, do you?? Films aren't any different.
